Some Results on the Bomber Problem

چکیده
The problem of optimally allocating partially effective, defensive weapons against randomly arriving enemy aircraft so that a bomber maximizes its probability of reaching its designated target is considered in the usual continuous-time context, and in a discretetime context. The problem becomes that of determining the optimal number of missiles K(n,t) to use against an enemy aircraft encountered at time (distance) t away from the target when n is the number of remaining weapons (missiles) in the bomber's arsenal. Various questions associated with the properties of the function K are explored including the long-standing, unproven conjecture that it is a nondecreasing function of its first variable.

ABCs of the bomber problem and its relatives
In a classic Markov decision problem of Derman, Lieberman, and Ross (1975) an investor has an initial capital x from which to make investments, the opportunities for which occur randomly over time. An investment of size y results in profit P (y), and the aim is maximize the sum of the profits obtained within a given time t. The problem is similar to a groundwater management problem of Burt (196...
متن کاملOn Optimal Allocation of a Continuous Resource Using an Iterative Approach and Total Positivity
We study a class of optimal allocation problems, including the well-known Bomber Problem, with the following common probabilistic structure. An aircraft equipped with an amount x of ammunition is intercepted by enemy airplanes arriving according to a homogenous Poisson process over a fixed time duration t. Upon encountering an enemy, the aircraft has the choice of spending any amount 0 ≤ y ≤ x ...
متن کاملThe Spend-It-All Region and Small Time Results for the Continuous Bomber Problem
A problem of optimally allocating partially effective ammunition x to be used on randomly arriving enemies in order to maximize an aircraft’s probability of surviving for time t, known as the Bomber Problem, was first posed by Klinger and Brown (1968). They conjectured a set of apparently obvious monotonicity properties of the optimal allocation function K x t . Although some of these conjectur...
متن کاملThe Heavy Bomber Industrial Base: a Study of Present and Future Capabilities
The declining procurement level and reduced quantity of new program starts driven by a dramatically smaller defense budget have generated concern for the continuing viability of the defense industrial base. Recent research on the impact of the aerospace industrial base’s downsizing relative to heavy bomber production has narrowly focused on the loss of technical and theoretical capabilities. Re...
متن کاملOperational effectiveness of suicide-bomber-detector schemes: a best-case analysis.
Standoff explosives-detection technologies allow, in principle, for the detection of pedestrian suicide bombers, although such sensors are not yet sufficiently affordable and reliable to justify widespread deployment. What if they were? Assuming the availability of cheap, perfectly sensitive and specific suicide-bomber-sensing devices, we analyze the operational effectiveness of sensor-based de...
